Fully Autonomous Wind Turbine Inspections with drones enhances ROBUR’s Wind Service Offer in the US
ROBUR’s strategy to become a global presence in renewables asset performance management has taken a step forward with the recent introduction of advanced drone inspection capabilities for wind turbines also in the Americas markets. Although initiated via the growing presence of ROBUR in USA, the capability to deliver throughout Americas and Europe is just a first step in a global delivery capability.
Of particular interest is the efficiency with which the new drone technology can capture repeatable and reliable blade condition data. Using fully autonomous flight guided by computer vision technologies, a full WTG inspection can be completed in as little as 10-12 minutes, taking images from four angles around each blade, and completing the inspection with a single flight – no pre-flight activity on site is required, meaning that each turbine is stopped for the minimum possible time.
The efficiency of image capture is enabled by advanced flight control software that can operate across a wide range of drone platforms including proprietary drones designed and built in USA using 99% USA sources components – a key capability that addresses sensitivity from some owner/ operators around national origin of some technology platforms.
Captured blade condition images are initially processed by advanced AI analytics, and supplemented with review by our blade experts to conclude and confirm defect classification.
Coupled with ROBUR’s comprehensive risk-based repair planning, certified repair implementations and performance optimization capabilities, a market-leading technology quickly becomes a vehicle for direct positive impact on AEP and investment return, with multi-national consistency and delivery capacity.
