ROBUR-affiliated company MLB providing a small bit of assistance on a whim blossomed into a long-lasting partnership with UPM GmbH in Schongau.
The first small job took a few days and involved cutting off a few pipes. Additional smaller and larger jobs concerning the maintenance and repair of the paper manufacturer’s machinery then followed. Now, the annual average number of men on site at Schongau is three per day.
“You start by cutting things off, do it well, are there for the customer and that turns into a partnership,” says Dietmar Müller, project manager at MLB.
Christmas 2020 was not a tranquil time for 18 employees at MLB who were inundated with work. The machines in Schongau come to a stop three times a year and need to be serviced and repaired. The standstill is carried out for technical reasons and facilitates required maintenance and safety work.
Tasked with a special assignment this time around, the work included replacing a 3.5-ton screw conveyor. Its coupler had been knocked out after more than 10 years in service, causing it to “hop” every now and then. This screw conveyor was used, however, to transport cellulose – the basic material used to make paper – into the paper machine. A complete breakdown would be disastrous. For removal, a number of pipes first had to be dismantled to “clear the way” for the required heavy equipment to be brought in.
While we’re on the subject of pipes, it’s also worth mentioning that the customer UPM has come to appreciate the quality of the work done by the MLB colleagues from IMO (Industriemontagen Merseburg), who are very well versed in pipe construction and maintenance. Just another example of how the network of specialists within ROBUR has proven itself. Starting with smaller support services, major pipe maintenance is also planned for UPM in Schongau for the first time in 2021.
The Schongau-based UPM GmbH is a member of the Finnish UPM Group. The Group has 18,700 employees, over €10 billion in annual revenues, and production facilities in six countries, making it one of the larger players in the organic and forestry sector. It views itself as an innovator for sustainable closed-loop recycling with biomass.
