SAT KERNTECHNIK in action for the “Radium Action Plan”
Teams of experts from SAT KERNTECHNIK help with the decontamination of former production facilities in the Swiss watch industry.
From 1907 to 1963, luminous paint containing radium was used in the production of watches in Switzerland. Then, however, it was forbidden because the toxic and carcinogenic effects of the radioactive substance had been recognised. Radium has a half-life of around 1,600 years and residues of the old paint can be found at over 700 former production sites in Switzerland, as was revealed by a study by the Swiss “Federal Office of Public Health” (BAG) as part of the “Radium Action Plan”. In 200 of these, the pollution is so high that a need for cleanup has been identified.
The surprisingly high number of contaminated places is due to the fact that at that time production steps were often carried out at home and the paint was used there.
The decontamination work was carried out by SAT KERNTECHNIK on behalf of the BAG. For this purpose, the paint residues are measured radiologically and made visible by various means including UV light, and then professionally removed and safely prepared for landfill or disposal. For the two-person teams, this involves major effort. The reason for this is that the paint was spread over a wide area in various locations – often private – so that remains are regularly found in a wide variety of places, including radiators, door handles, drains, naturally enough in the floors, or often even in the garden. The cleanup of each of the former production facilities, therefore, typically takes between 2 and 4 weeks. A further complicating factor is that the deployment locations are spread across almost all of Switzerland, which means that the equipment and the work team must be highly mobile.
Of course, not only are the rooms decontaminated, but the BAG has also arranged for all employees to be closely examined and checked to see whether they could be endangered by “incorporation”, i.e. the entry of radioactive substances into the body.
