Since the 1950s, the family-owned company Varel Papier- und Kartonfabrik (PKV), located in the town with the same name on the Jade Bay between Whilelmshaven and Bremerhaven, has been a leader in the production of paper and cardboard from recycled paper. Since 2007, the company has also been consistently relying on the power of digitization.
Sustainability has many dimensions. One of them is, of course, the circular economy, and Varel is one of the pioneers in this area and already has been for a long time. In cooperation with RODIAS, the specialists for IT solutions in the field of process optimization and so-called Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), Varel is working just as consistently on another dimension of sustainability: the efficient use of resources in processes that are as lean as possible.
On the IT side, the IBM Maximo software is the basic system for Varel’s EAM. Having already optimized order management, materials management, logistics and purchasing department in recent years, the company started optimizing maintenance and service management in 2018.
The aim is to reduce downtime – for planned maintenance work as well as to prevent unplanned downtime. The goal is to achieve more transparency on the cost side and, of course, to reduce costs.
Modern maintenance concepts often rely on external, highly specialized service providers. Therefore, it is also advantageous that IBM Maximo offers appropriate solutions, which optimally integrate the partners into the process chains.
With RODIAS, PKV relies on concentrated IT competence.
Varel and its 600 employees are pleased that their factory is even more careful in its use of valuable resources and that they are thus making a worthwhile contribution to our environment.
