ROBUR on a Private Level: Power woman and German champion – Melina Matz
Melina Matz has been working at ROBUR WIND in Bremen since April 2020 and is responsible for the marketing and sales of the global ROBUR WIND business unit as Sales & Marketing Manager. She likes to spend her free time as a course instructor in the gym, among other things, and is happy to inspire people for sport and, in doing so, make them a little bit happier.
Anyone meeting Melina for the first time quickly sees that she is a sporty person. And this is no coincidence, given that the person sitting in front of us is a former two-time German bodybuilding champion – a sport that demands a lot from a person who, like Melina, wants to be at the top. During the peak of her competition preparations, she trained up to 4 hours a day, 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, and went on a 16-week diet with a maximum of 1000 calories a day. And all that despite the hard training. Then additional dehydration shortly before the competition started. This demands a mental strength that not everyone can or wants to master.
This dedication was rewarded with the honour of being able to call herself German champion twice. Looking back, however, Melina says in a self-critical tone: “Despite all the fame and pride about what I achieved, it wasn’t really healthy.” This is why she would advise anyone who is contemplating a similar career to take a close look at what it entails to have to work so much and so hard on yourself. It took her 18 months to “come down again”.
Melina is still very much active these days, but in a much more “moderate” way. And sport still takes up a lot of space in her life. She gives classes 4-5 days a week as a LESMILLS instructor in a fitness studio in Bremen. She also does online classes via video in these pandemic times. Body Balance (a mix of yoga and Pilates), Body Pump (a special workout with barbells), Body Combat (a type of shadow boxing) or Body Attack (a high-intensity cardio workout) are the courses from the international programme run by the company based in Auckland, New Zealand. Yet the more “classic” programme with “abs-legs-butt”, jumping (on the trampoline) and back fitness are also part of her sporting portfolio. “I really love getting other people excited about sport and helping them to do something for themselves. When you’re on stage, you’re already slipping into a small role, then before you know it, you’re a role model and a motivator.” The courses have been running purely on screen for the last few months (as of May 2021) and Melina hopes that the studios will be able to open again soon.
The question of whether she could also imagine being a full-time fitness trainer is answered with a negative response by the 29-year-old sports enthusiast. “For me, the fun would fall by the wayside. The job at ROBUR is great fun, challenges me in a different way and lets me use other strengths. Being a fitness trainer involves using your body as a working tool. You always have to be physically healthy and fit – I don’t want to be dependent on that.”
However, she wants to get her colleagues at ROBUR WIND in Bremen excited about sports and motivate them to become active in the company sports programme once the pandemic is over and collective sports are possible again.
Melina also takes a break from sports during her holidays – a mini-workout and a bit of jogging in the morning is enough.
